Mission and Goals

Mission

The IUCN SSC Afrotheria Specialist Group facilitates the conservation of hyraxes, the aardvark, elephant-shrews or sengis, golden moles, tenrecs, and their habitats by:

  1. providing sound scientific advice and guidance to conservationists, governments, and other interested groups;
  2. raising public awareness; and
  3. developing research and conservation programmes.

Goals

  1. Agree on a taxonomy within each section
  2. Identify key taxa and sites for immediate conservation action
  3. Update IUCN Redlist
  4. Develop or update conservation strategies (including education and research priorities)
  5. Implement conservation plans
